Have You Checked Your Doors Lately?

Did you know that an average home can have 24 doors?  At least two that go directly to the outside ie. the main entrance, and the back or side door.  In addition, there are screen doors, bathroom doors, bedroom doors,  doors to the office, the attic, the basement and of course the many doors for you to gain entrance into storage and closet areas.  Let’s not forget the doors to the garage.


The doors that are the most important are those that can prevent you from exiting the home in the case of a fire or other emergency, cause you to be trapped and unable to exit the room you are in, cause injury or allow someone to easily enter your home.

Unfortunately many people do not think about checking doors as a safety measure.  It is often when they are beyond repair or when they suddenly just stopped functioning after they were “rigged” with a temporary fix.  These fixes might include putting something in front of it to keep it closed or opened, removing pieces on the door frame to help the deadbolt work or putting plastic over a cracked window.

Maintaining doors to be sure they are functioning properly should be a standard part of your home maintenance.  Sometimes it can be as simple as oiling a part that got rusted over time, or replacing an old doorknob.  There can also be times when the entire door may need to be replaced.  In any case, when it comes to basic safety, check that all doors open and close without sticking, or requiring significant force.  Be sure that all doorknobs and locks are working properly and pieces are not missing.  Replace any cracked or missing glass.  If you have a medical reason(arthritis, strength etc.)  why you are no longer able to turn the doorknob or unlock the door, then consider replacing the mechanism with the type more appropriate for you.  Finally, think about having a chain lock or other mechanism that can be helpful when someone comes knocking at your door.
